  6. Greg's Buttons is a control panel that lets you customize the user interface
  7. of a Macintosh running System 7™.  Greg's Buttons requires that your Mac
  8. support color, so it won't work on the Plus, SE, Classic, or PowerBook 100.
  9. It works fine with both color and gray-scale monitors, and although it will
  10. still work on a black and white screen, the effect won't be as impressive.
  11.  
  12. LIST OF FEATURES
  13. =================
  14. •    Replaces the standard flat black and white push buttons, check boxes, and
  15.     radio buttons with tasteful 3-D color ones.  These buttons are designed to
  16.     complement the windows and scroll bars in the System 7 interface, and in
  17.     particular they use the color tints that you can select in the "Color"
  18.     control panel.  You can choose from two styles of push buttons and three
  19.     styles each of radio buttons and check boxes.  There is also an option to
  20.     draw the text of push buttons using an "embossed" style.
  21.  
  22. •    Substitutes a font of your choice (chosen from two versions each of
  23.     Palatino and Helvetica) for Chicago as your system font.  The system
  24.     font is used in menus, window titles, dialogs, and several other places
  25.     throughout the Mac interface.  Note that this feature does not just change
  26.     the menu font.  Also note that this feature has nothing to do with the
  27.     "Views" control panel, which changes the font in Finder™ windows.
  28.  
  29. •    Lets you select the background color of dialog boxes, menus (both the
  30.     text and background colors), and Finder™ windows.  Since the dialog box
  31.     colorization feature is known to cause some unavoidable aesthetic
  32.     conflicts, there is an "Exclude Applications…" button which lets you
  33.     specify applications in which the dialog boxes should not be colorized.
  34.  
  35. •    Colorizes the mini icons (the smallest size that you can select in the
  36.     "Views" control panel) in Finder™ list views (View by Name, Date, Size,
  37.     Kind, Label, Version, Comment, Favorite Melon, Astrological Sign, Sexual
  38.     Preference, etc.).
  39.  
  40. •    Colorizes the stop sign, caution, and note alert icons.
  41.  
  42. •    Changes to "Greg's Buttons" setting will take effect as soon as you close
  43.     the control panel.

  45. CHANGES (since v3.1)
  46. ====================
  47. •    Fixed the conflict with the Now Menus application substitution feature.
  48. •  Added Palatino 14 to the list of substitute system fonts.  It is good for
  49.     large screens but the font is a bit too big to fit in buttons and dialogs.
  50. •  You can now register online using CompuServe.
  51. •  I have a new e-mail address.  The old one expires in mid-October.

  64. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  65. =================
  66. Greg's Buttons does some serious fiddling with the Mac user interface.
  67. Applications often make invalid assumptions about their operating
  68. environment which no longer hold when you customize your Mac.  Since the
  69. programmers did not forsee these changes, and since they never had the
  70. opportunity to test their products with Greg's Buttons,  there are bound to
  71. be some conflicts.  In most cases, these are not the fault of Greg's Buttons,
  72. but if I find out about them, I will try my best to work around such
  73. problems.  Here are some of the most common examples:
  74.  
  75. MasterJuggler
  76. -------------
  77. •  The "Substitute System Font" feature will not function properly with
  78.     MasterJuggler version 1.57c or earlier, but it should work fine with
  79.     version 1.58.  Contact ALSoft for an upgrade.
  80.  
  81. Directory Assistance II
  82. ----------------------
  83. •  I am told that Directory Assistance II prevents Greg's Buttons from
  84.     colorizing the "New Folder..." button in the "Save as..." dialog box.
  85.     It seems that Directory Assistance II is overriding the normal button
  86.     drawing routines and is substituting its own custom black and white
  87.     version.  I am afraid that there is nothing I can do about this.  Sorry.
  88.  
  89. theTypeBook
  90. ------------
  91. •  When Greg's Buttons is installed, theTypeBook will generate a font
  92.     error message, reporting "System Heap bit set: Font not loaded" for
  93.     the ".Cambridge" FOND.  This is nothing to be concerned about, and
  94.     you can disable theTypeBook's font error checking using its "Other
  95.     Options" dialog box (obtained by holding down the option key and
  96.     selecting the "File" menu).
  97.  
  98. MacWrite II
  99. -----------
  100. •  When the "Substitute System Font" feature is enabled, the "File", "Edit",
  101.     "Size", "Style", and "Format" menus in MacWrite II may freeze closed,
  102.     refuse to pull down when you click on them.   To fix this problem, switch
  103.     to one of the "(Chicago Spacing)" versions of the substitute system font.
  104.     This is a bug in the menu drawing routines in MacWrite II.
  105.  
  106. •  If the "Font" menu in MacWrite II freezes closed, you should remove the
  107.     "Claris Fonts" file in your system folder (possibly in a subfolder named
  108.     "Claris") to force MacWrite II to reconstruct its 'Font" menu the next
  109.     time you launch it.  This is also a bug in MacWrite II.
  110.  
  111. Canvas
  112. -------
  113. •  When the "Substitute System Font" feature is enabled, some of the menu
  114.     items in Canvas may be "blurred" when you drag the mouse over them.  To
  115.     fix this problem, either turn off the "Substitute System Font" feature or
  116.     selct the "Helvetica 12 (Chicago Spacing)" font.  This is a bug in Canvas.
  117.  
  118. America Online
  119. --------------
  120. •  I have heard that the buttons in AOL remain flat.  This is not a bug in
  121.     Greg's Buttons.  Rather, AOL bypasses the usual button routines in favor
  122.     of its own custom routines that look like the old style buttons while
  123.     behaving slightly differently when pushed.  There is nothing I can do
  124.     about such applications that insist on using non-standard buttons.
  125.  
  126. Alarm Clock DA
  127. ---------------
  128. •  The Alarm Clock DA does not work properly with the "(Normal Spacing)"
  129.     substitute system fonts.  Use the "(Chicago Spacing)" fonts instead.
  130.     I think Apple has fixed this problem with the System 7.1 Alarm Clock.
  131.  
  132. WriteNow
  133. ----------
  134. •  If you try to use the Balloon Help for the Greg's Buttons control panel
  135.     while WriteNow 3.0 is running, you may encounter spurious help balloons
  136.     flashing on and off while you drag the mouse over Greg's Buttons.  This
  137.     happens with any control panel, and it appears to be a bug in WriteNow.
  138.  
  139. Microsoft Graph
  140. ---------------
  141. •  The Microsoft Graph module seems to override the System 7 Color Buttons
  142.     feature.   As far as I can tell, MSGraph bypasses the standard button
  143.     drawing (and window dragging) routines in favor of its own, which look
  144.     and behave just like the standard ones.  It also uses non-standard
  145.     windows without a close box, and it akes over a strip at the bottom of
  146.     the screen for a status bar.  Why can't Microsoft do things the Apple way
  147.     like everybody else?
  148.  
  149. Finder 7.1.1
  150. ------------
  151. •  The Finder mini-icon colorization feature will not work with Finder 7.1.1.
  152.     Nothing bad will happen; your mini-icons will revert to black and white.
  153.     If and when Finder 7.1.1 is actually released, I will release a new version
  154.     of Greg's Buttons fixing this problem.  All the rest of the features should
  155.     work with Finder 7.1.1 without requiring any modification.
  156.  
  157. COMMENTS, and FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
  158. ==============================================
  159. If Greg's Buttons causes problems on your Mac, try disabling its features
  160. one-by-one until the problem goes away.  Most likely, the problem is caused
  161. by only one of the many features, and the rest of the features will work
  162. fine for you.  In particular, any problem relating to dialog boxes is probably
  163. caused by the dialog box colorization feature, while a problem involving
  164. menus is most likely due to either the substitute system font or the menu
  165. colorization feature.  The buttons themselves are exremely stable.
  166.  
  167. "Substitute System Font" Feature
  168. -------------------------------
  169. •  Several programs, such as Canvas, MacWrite II, and the Alarm Clock DA
  170.     do not bother to check the system font spacing, assuming the spacing for
  171.     Chicago.  As a result, they do not work properly with the "Normal Spacing"
  172.     versions of the substitute system fonts.  In order to maintain
  173.     compatibility with such programs, I have included a "Chicago Spacing"
  174.     version which uses spacing similar to Chicago.  You may notice, however,
  175.     that the numbers will appear oddly spaced in this version of the font.
  176.  
  177. •  No, it is not possible to substitute an arbitrary font for the system font.
  178.     The font has to be tweaked rather significantly in order for it to work
  179.     reliably.  If you have a pet font that you'd like to see added to the list of
  180.     alternate system fonts in Greg's Buttons, let me know via e-mail.
  181.  
  182. •  When you switch system fonts, the menus may not adjust to the new font
  183.     spacing immediately.  This will be fixed when the menu bar is redrawn.
  184.  
  185. •  Note that thin fonts, such as "Helvetica 12" and "Palatino 12" will be
  186.     illegible when dimmed or grayed-out on a black and white monitor.
  187.  
  188. •  The "Palatino 14" substitute system font is a little to big to work well
  189.     as a system font.  Push buttons may appear cramped, and text might not
  190.     always fit properly in dialog boxes.  On the other hand, I think this font
  191.     looks great on large screens, and I am willing to ignore such glitches.
  192.  
  193. "Alerts and Dialog Boxes" Background Color Feature
  194. -----------------------------------------------
  195. •  Some applications assume that they are dealing with a black and white
  196.     dialog box while Greg's Buttons substitutes a color one.  The difference is
  197.     enough to cause some odd behavior.  There is no way to fix such conflicts
  198.     without rewriting parts of the offending applications.  However, you can
  199.     specify applications to be excluded from this feature by clicking the 
  200.     "Exclude Applications..." button and adding the application to the exclusion
  201.     list.  The list includes Microsoft Word, Canvas, Help!, and Disk First Aid.
  202.  
  203. •  For some choices of the dialog box background color, the text insertion
  204.     cursor may be drawn in a just barely visible color.  This is the result of
  205.     the brain-dead routines the Mac uses to figure out a "suitable" inverse
  206.     (it thinks light yellow shows up well against a light gray, for instance).
  207.     To get around this, try changing the dialog box background color very
  208.     slightly, and the inverse routine may arbitrarily pick a better color.
  209.  
  210. •  When dialog colorization is turned on, you may notice that alert boxes
  211.     (the kind with the stop sign, caution, or note icon in the top-left corner)
  212.     are drawn with a grayed-out border.  This is a documented bug in the
  213.     system software, and Apple intends to fix it in a future release.
  214.  
  215. "Menu Bar and Menus" Color Feature
  216. --------------------------------
  217. •  If you have used another control panel (such as "Aurora" or "Kolor 2.0") to
  218.     color your menu bar, your previous menu color settings will override the
  219.     settings in the Greg's Buttons control panel.  If you want to use the menu
  220.     colorization feature in Greg's Buttons instead, use the other control panel
  221.     to set the menu colors back to black and white.  Greg's Buttons will then
  222.     remove the color information from the system file and substitute its own.
  223.  
  224. •  If your monitor is in 16-bit mode (thousands of colors) and you colorize
  225.     your menus, you may encounter gibberish in the menu bar when you launch
  226.     an application.  This is not a bug in Greg's Buttons (or Aurora or Kolor for
  227.     that matter), but rather a bug in the system software.
  228.  
  229. "Finder Window Color" Feature
  230. ----------------------------
  231. •  When you quit from an application that modifies the system color palette,
  232.     some Finder windows may be left with sploches of random colors in them.
  233.     This will go away as soon as the offending windows are re-drawn.  There
  234.     is nothing that I can do about this problem.  The Finder is ultimately 
  235.     responsible for updating its windows; I just tell it what color to use.
  236.  
  237. "System 7 Color Buttons" Feature
  238. -------------------------------
  239. •  The third radio button dot style uses the highlight color that you can
  240.     select in the "Color" control panel.
  241.  
  242. •  Occasionally, you may find that push button titles are "fuzzy", "blocky"
  243.     or "blurred".  This has been known to happen in Word, the HP DeskWriter
  244.     dialog box and Alias Director.  This problem will go away if you turn
  245.     off the "Embossed Push Button Text".
  246.  
  247. Customing Greg's Buttons using ResEdit
  248. -------------------------------------
  249. •  If you don't know what a CICN is, then I won't tell you, but if you do know
  250.     and have ResEdit, then you can design your own radio buttons and check
  251.     boxes.  To add the color tinges, you use the corresponding SICN resources.
  252.     The first SICN in each 2-SICN list gives the pixels that are drawn with
  253.     the dark tinge.  The second SICN in the list (the mask) gives all the pixels
  254.     that are drawn with either the light or dark tinge.  So, the pixels drawn
  255.     with the light tinge are those in the mask but not in the first SICN.
  256.     If you do not want any color tinges, just delete the SICN.
  257.  
  258. •  Do not use ResEdit on the active Greg's Buttons file!  In addition to the
  259.     standard warnings, this could crash your Mac.  Make a copy first, and use
  260.     ResEdit on that copy.  After you have made your changes, drag the original
  261.     file out of the system folder, put the copy in its place, and restart.
  262.  
  263. •  Resources in the System file will override those in the Greg's Buttons
  264.     file with the same ID number.  If you want your ResEdit modifications to
  265.     last between versions of Greg's Buttons, install them in your System file.
  266.     This way, you won't have to reinstall these resources every time you get
  267.     a new version of Greg's Buttons.
  268.  
  269. REGISTRATION
  270. ==============
  271. "Greg's Buttons" is SHAREWARE.  You may try it out for ten days. If after
  272. that time, you think it is a frivolous waste of processor time and disk
  273. space, just take a good look at your Mac without Greg's Buttons.  It will
  274. look dull, Dull, DULL!  If you want to keep it, you should register as follows:

  316.     Please do not worry whether I got your money.  If you sent a check, you'll
  317.     find out from your bank, and if you sent cash, well, it's the thought that
